A thumbnail URL can help you review an existing video’s visual treatment or find the image associated with a link you already have. The YouTube Thumbnail Viewer builds public image addresses from a video identifier. It does not retrieve the video itself or access a creator’s private files.
Enter a supported video link
Paste a full YouTube video URL into YouTube video URL or ID, then choose Generate result. Supported forms include a normal watch URL, a youtu.be link, and YouTube Shorts, embed, or live paths. You can also enter an eleven-character ID directly. A channel page or playlist URL without a supported video identifier will fail validation.
Use the Video ID Extractor first if you need to check which identifier a long link contains. The viewer does not check video titles, account permissions, or ownership. A well-formed identifier only tells the tool how to construct an image address.
Follow the resolution fallback
For the example input https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXc, the generated text is https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXc/maxresdefault.jpg. This is a construction example; the tool cannot promise that any particular video has that image available.
The preview initially requests maxresdefault.jpg. If loading fails, or the loaded image is narrower than 300 pixels, it tries hqdefault.jpg. If that fallback also fails, the page reports that YouTube did not provide an accessible thumbnail. The Open public thumbnail button always points to the hqdefault.jpg address, even when the larger preview succeeded. Consequently, the button and generated text can refer to different resolutions.
Save and review responsibly
Open the public image and use your browser’s normal image-saving controls. The result download contains the address as text; it is not a bundled image download. Compare the saved image’s actual dimensions before using it in a layout. An unavailable high-resolution version cannot be repaired by changing the file extension.
Loading the preview contacts YouTube’s image servers. The request is not an upload to ERITHRA, but the thumbnail is a remote resource rather than an entirely offline operation. Availability can vary with the video and network conditions. Respect the creator’s rights when reusing imagery. For testing an image you own beside a proposed title, use the Thumbnail Preview Tool, which creates a local layout approximation.
