Frequently asked questions

Why can code points differ from visible characters?

A visible grapheme can contain several Unicode code points, such as a combining accent or a joined emoji sequence.

What is the UTF-8 bytes metric for?

It measures encoded byte length. A non-ASCII character can take multiple bytes, so byte limits and character limits are different.
