Expand a short HEX color and read its RGB and HSL values

Convert #369 to #336699, inspect its channel values, and understand why notation conversion does not establish text contrast.

Change notation while keeping the same color

The HEX to RGB Converter accepts three- or six-digit hexadecimal colors and returns normalized HEX, RGB, and HSL representations. These are different ways of describing the same opaque RGB color, not different image file formats or print color profiles.

Enter the value in HEX color and select Generate result. The leading # is optional, letter case is ignored, and surrounding whitespace is trimmed. Values outside the supported three- or six-digit shape are rejected. In particular, this tool does not accept four- or eight-digit HEX values containing an alpha channel.

Expand #369 into full channels

Enter #369 and generate the result. The expected output is:

#336699
rgb(51, 102, 153)
hsl(210.0, 50.0%, 40.0%)

The short form duplicates each digit: 3 becomes 33, 6 becomes 66, and 9 becomes 99. Each two-digit hexadecimal pair is then interpreted as a channel value from 0 through 255. The preview should show the same blue as the full #336699 entry.

Use this check when a design note contains shorthand but an application requires explicit RGB numbers. Copy the entire rgb(...) expression for a CSS declaration, or the individual channel numbers when a design application’s fields expect separate entries.

Understand what HSL helps you compare

HSL expresses hue, saturation, and lightness. It can be easier to discuss a hue change or a lighter variation using these components than by editing hexadecimal pairs. The displayed HSL values are rounded to one decimal place, so a future round trip through another tool may differ slightly after rounding.

HSL lightness is not a text contrast score. Two colors with an appealing numerical relationship can still be difficult to read together. WCAG’s contrast guidance evaluates foreground against background; this converter displays one color and does not perform that evaluation.

Keep the source color decision reviewable

If your starting point is an image rather than a documented value, use Color Picker from Image and inspect the alpha channel when transparency is present. If you want several related options, use Color Palette Generator and review them as proposals rather than a finished accessible theme.

The conversion runs locally in the browser and needs no image upload or external lookup. Display hardware, color management, and surrounding colors can affect appearance, so retain the numerical value in your design record rather than relying only on a screenshot of the swatch.
